This mesh tubular product is filled on site with a compost filter media or growing media. It can be a continuous length, or can be cut to fit the application, and can be palletized.

The Filtrexx® Advantage

Filtrexx® brand compost filter socks are the only filter socks in the marketplace to meet all regulatory specifications. They are also constructed to withstand the elements and not rupture or tear, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Using Filtrexx® products is your assurance that the product:

  • Avoids the risk of regulatory non compliance
  • Eliminates costly re-install and noncompliance costs
  • Saves money for you over the life of the project

Sediment Control

Filtrexx® Sediment Control is a three-dimensional tubular sediment control and stormwater filtration device typically used as a silt fence replacement (perimeter control device) for sediment and soluble pollutants (such as phosphorus and petroleum hydrocarbons), on and around construction activities. Filtrexx® Sediment Control traps sediment and soluble pollutants by filtering runoff water as it passes through the organic structure, and by allowing water to temporarily pond behind the device, allowing deposition of suspended solids. Sediment control is also used to reduce runoff flow velocities on sloped surfaces.

Benefits include:

  • 50% more design capacity and flow through than silt fence
  • NO trenching, NO soil disturbance
  • Easy removal and little disposal costs
  • 8x less maintenance than silt fence (USEPA)
  • Exceeds federal standards
  • Reduced ecological footprint: recycled, biobased, locally manufactured, indigenous materials, carbon neutral.
  • Can be Installed by trained, certified professionals

Stormwater Management

The Filtrexx® Compost Stormwater Blanket (CSWB™) is used as a practice for stormwater runoff reduction and permanent vegetation establishment; used on post-construction soil surfaces and in Low Impact Development (LID) projects. Stormwater blankets are intended for application and use where:

  • Reduction of pollutant loading in storm runoff is required
  • Land disturbing activities have ceased
  • Permanent vegetation is required
  • Runoff volume reduction from landscape or drainage area is necessary
  • Reduction in the size of stormwater collection, bioretention ponds, and rain gardens is necessary
  • Where Low Impact Development ordinances and guidelines must be met

Stormwater blankets are a natural sponge for rainwater and non-concentrated storm runoff. By holding large volumes of rainwater at the soil surface, Stormwater blankets increase infiltration, evapotranspiration, and plant available water that would normally wind up as runoff. These processes restore the natural site hydrology through groundwater recharge and atmospheric water vapor.

Erosion Control

The Filtrexx® Slope Protection and Compost Erosion Control Blanket (CECB™) is a practice used in slope stabilization, erosion control, and vegetation establishment. It is used on slopes to stabilize bare, disturbed, or erodible soils on and around construction activities.

Slope protection is used for temporary and permanent slope erosion control and vegetation establishment applications. Slope protection is surface applied to a depth of 1.5 to 2 inches or 200-270 cubic yards/ac, and is typically applied to slopes with pneumatic blower trucks or similar equipment.

Filtrexx® LockDown™ Netting can be used to increase the stabilization and erosion control capabilities of slope protection. LockDown™ Netting is a single net erosion control blanket stapled to the slope prior to application of the slope protection. Together, these products form an interlocking system of structure and natural organic material for maximum slope stabilization and vegetative sustainability.

Benefits include:

  • 100% soil contact
  • Seed mixed throughout blanket profile
  • Increases stormwater infiltration
  • Reduces runoff
  • Adds organic matter, buffers pH, provides slow release nutrients, and restores soil biology which aids in better growth
  • Reduced ecological footprint: recycled, biobased, locally manufactured, indigenous materials, carbon neutral.
  • Can be used on 1:1 slopes with LockDown™ Netting

Streambank Stabilization

The Filtrexx® Bank stabilization is a vegetated soft armoring system designed to stabilize banks and prevent erosion of riparian areas, waterways, and shoreline banks. The Bank Stabilization system uses heavy duty tubular mesh nettings and/or geogrid to provide structural protection, control erosion, and establish and reinforce vegetation all in one simple system.

Filtrexx® Bank Stabilization has been specifically developed to withstand high flow velocities and shear stresses that conventional products cannot withstand. This patented system allows vegetation to grow from the inside out to create a natural anchor within the tubular mesh Soxx™, and between the bank and the stabilization system. Our drip tape irrigation system (optional) ensures rapid establishment and sustainability of seed and live stake plantings.

Filtrexx® Bank Stabilization system is recommended for:

  • Structural stability and protection from toe-cutting and sloughing of the waterway banks
  • Structural stability and protection from mass wasting and sloughing of the shoreline from wave action
  • Control of erosion from overland runoff, wave action, and shear stress from concentrated flows
  • Control of runoff velocity flowing to receiving water
  • Dissipation of runoff energy flowing to receiving water
  • Sustained vegetation health
  • Sediment, soluble pollutant, and pathogen removal efficiency of runoff flowing to receiving water
  • Restoration of riparian ecosystem and wildlife habitat corridors

Slope Restoration

Filtrexx® Slope Interruption is a three-dimensional tubular runoff and erosion control device used for runoff velocity and erosion control on hill slopes prior to final stabilization during construction activities. Filtrexx® Slope Interruption slows runoff velocity and reduces soil erosion by dissipating the energy of overland sheet flow runoff, reducing its erosive potential, while also trapping moving sediment and soluble pollutants.

Advantages to Filtrexx® Slope Interruption include:

  • Slow runoff velocity
  • Reduced slope soil erosion
  • Reduced effective slope length
  • Reduced ecological footprint: recycled, biobased, locally manufactured, indigenous materials, carbon neutral

Vegetation Establishment

The Filtrexx® Vegetated Filter Strip is a temporary or permanent vegetative filtration practice used to reduce site stormwater runoff sediment and soluble pollutants, such as nutrients, heavy metals, bacteria, and petroleum hydrocarbons, from leaving a site and entering conveyance systems or receiving waters. Filtrexx® Vegetated Filter Strips are generally used for post-construction applications where permanent vegetation is designed to increase stormwater infiltration and pollutant filtration. Filtrexx® Vegetated Filter Strips are of a specified width and utilize a 1 to 2 in (25-50mm) layer of Filtrexx® Growing Media™ blended with a specified seed mix and are applied with a pneumatic blower or similar equipment.

Areas where Filtrexx® Vegetated Filter Strips are used include:

  • Highway, street, and parking lot runoff
  • Surface water, riparian area, and wetland buffers
  • Above streambank or shoreline structural stabilization projects

Soil Remediation

Filtrexx® Engineered Soil is a permanent stormwater infiltration practice used to reduce site stormwater runoff volume and loading of sediment and soluble pollutants; such as nutrients, heavy metals, bacteria, and petroleum hydrocarbons, from a contributing watershed or drainage area. Filtrexx® Engineered Soil is manufactured on site by incorporating 2-4 in (50-100mm) of Filtrexx®

Growing Media™ with native soil and tilling to a depth of 6-12 in (150-300mm) to create a functional soil designed for high infiltration, biofiltration, and plant sustainability.

Filtrexx® Engineered Soils improve infiltration by increasing water absorption (water holding capacity), soil porosity, and soil structure through the incorporation of Filtrexx® Growing Media™. Stormwater runoff volume reduction is closely correlated to reduction of sediment and soluble pollutant loading to receiving waters. Filtrexx® Growing Media™ chemically binds soluble water pollutants such as phosphorus, ammonium-nitrogen, heavy metals, bacteria, and petroleum hydrocarbons.

Beneficial microorganisms in Growing Media™ can decompose captured pollutants to less toxic and even beneficial forms, while plant uptake can further reduce captured pollutant concentrations in the engineered soil solution. Soil amendments used to construct Filtrexx® Engineered Soils can be applied with a pneumatic blower, spreader, or similar equipment.

Applications where Filtrexx® Engineered Soils may be used include:

  • Around bioretention systems and rain gardens
  • Around stormwater and sediment retention ponds
  • Parking lot infiltration islands
  • Vegetated (green) roof systems
  • Upslope from stormwater receiving areas or conveyance systems, including: channels, ditches, swales, streams, rivers, lakes, and wetlands
  • Areas receiving runoff from impervious surfaces, hardscapes, and source pollutant landscapes, including: roads, highways, parking lots, rooftops, and land disturbing activities
  • Projects where LID, Green Infrastructure, or Green Building practices are recommended or required

Channel Protection

Filtrexx® Channel Protection is a flexible soft armoring system designed to stabilize and prevent erosion of channel beds and banks used for stormwater conveyance and concentrated stormwater flow.

The Channel Protection technology provides structural protection, erosion control, vegetation establishment, and vegetation reinforcement in the same system. The weight and anchoring system can withstand high storm runoff velocities and hydraulic shear stresses surpassing most traditional soft armoring devices (turf reinforcement mats, riprap, cellular confinement systems) as tested by the Texas Transportation Institute.

Filtrexx® Nutrient Removal is a natural flocculent that is used with Filtrexx® stormwater pollution prevention practices, such as sediment control, check dams, inlet protection, biofiltration and bioretention systems. It is specifically used to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus loads in stormwater runoff, particularly on or around sensitive watersheds and receiving waters, TMDL (303d) listed water bodies, land application of fertilizer, land application of animal manure and litter, pet parks, animal feeding operations, golf courses, lawns, industrial areas, parking lots and parking decks, highways, car washes, marinas, and boat docks.

Filtrexx® Nutrient Removal is a natural material that chemically absorbs soluble phosphorus and nitrogen in water and stormwater, thereby reducing transport to water bodies, reducing bioavailability to aquatic plants, and minimizing algae blooms, eutrophication, and low dissolved oxygen levels that can lead to fish kill and collapse of aquatic ecosystems.

Coir Logs

Coconut Fiber for Erosion Control

Because natural coconut fiber is 100% biodegradable with a non-invasive design, it provides an easy, natural solution for projects requiring restoration, stabilization, or vegetative growth. These products have been successfully used to help manage Beach Erosion, Coastal Erosion, Soil Erosion, Water Erosion, Wind Erosion, River Bank Erosion, Weathering and Erosion.

Coconut fiber coir logs are a reliable erosion control product designed to aid in the stabilization and re-vegetation of hillsides, banks, shorelines and other areas prone to erosion. Logs are constructed with compact interior cores that have been densely packed with coconut fibers, then covered with an exterior coir mesh netting that helps to keep fibers in place. They are often used on steep slopes or areas with exposure to waves or currents which cause instability on a site.

How Coir Logs Can Help:

Coconut fiber logs are designed to help withstand wave impact and stormwater sheetflow forces without deformation or loss of materials. This helps to ensure maximum erosion prevention, enhance plant growth, and increase microbial activity. They are also a great way to collect and hold mineral and organic particles, providing a stable substrate, and promoting root growth. More importantly, the logs slowly biodegrade and leave a self-maintaining erosion prevention system.

Coir Logs are Placed:

  • In flowing water areas: They can be placed directly on the bank, often retaining fill material or securing new channel alignment.
  • In standing water: Coir logs are placed offshore to break waves and encourage sedimentation and re-vegetation.

Natural Fibers vs. Geotextile Fabrics

Erosion control products consist of both natural fibers and synthetic fabrics. Depending on the materials used and environmental factors, some fibers will last longer than others during the soil erosion control process.

Natural Fibers
Typically made from materials such as coconut coir, straw and wood fibers that naturally biodegrade over a period of time.

Geotextiles
Constructed from synthetic fibers used to support the soil or other materials underneath roads, rip rap and more. Geotextiles typically feature either a woven or nonwoven construction. Woven fibers are used in separation and stabilization applications, while non-woven fabrics are ideal for areas needing increased filtration.

Compost

Why do we use compost and composted materials? Because Nature Can Do What Man Cannot®.

Filtrexx® International is dedicated to using only natural, biobased materials like compost in all of its technologies. Filtrexx® has developed these materials for stormwater filtration, soil erosion, stormwater reduction, vegetation establishment and sustainability applications.

RipRap

Filtrexx® Rip Rap Grout is a seeded organic growing media used to establish permanent vegetation within the interstitial void spaces of rip rap armoring systems. Filtrexx® Rip Rap Grout utilizes only Filtrexx GrowingMedia™. There are many benefits to vegetating riprap systems.

Advantages to using Filtrexx® Rip Rap Grout include:

  • Vegetated riprap and similar hard armoring systems will mimic soft armoring systems
  • Increased wildlife habitat, increased landscape aesthetics, enhanced ecosystem function and restoration
  • Increased sediment and soluble pollutant removal from stormwater
  • Reduced stormwater runoff volume and peak flow rates
